An American In Paris was written by Gershwin after his visits to Paris around 1926, having initially traveled to study under Ravel and later returning having become firm friends with the composer. Meanwhile, Copland's monumental 'Great American Symphony', a shining North American example of what was seen as a Euro-centric art form. Nostalgia fuses with fresh scenes in this piece that captured the giddy feeling of the nation in the aftermath of World War Two.
